MANCHESTER UNITED vs BENFICA – REVIEW

MAN UTD  2  - Berbatov (30), Fletcher (59)

Benfica 2       - Jones (OG 3), Aimar (61)

It was a disappointing European night for both Manchester clubs. City slumped to their second defeat of the season against Napoli, raising doubts whether they can qualify for the next round.
Manchester United could only manage one point against Benfica in a tough match. Wayne Rooney missed the match due to injury.
Benfica were ahead by a goal as early as the third minute.  A Phil Jones own goal put the Portuguese club ahead.
Manchester United responded with some good football and were rewarded at the half hour mark, with Berbatov scoring of Nani’s cross. This was Berbatov’s  first Champions League goal in over three years. The Bulgarian spearheaded the United attack in Rooney’s absence.
Both teams went level at half time at 1-1. Manchester United started the second half brightly with a great chance for Fabio early in the second half. United soon scored in the 59th minute. Darren Fletcher was at the end of a good cross from Patrice Evra and scored at the second attempt.
United’s lead did not last long as in the very next minute Benfica scored due to De Gea’s error. De Gea’s misfired kick went straight to Bruno Cesar whose cross hit Rio Ferdinand and fell in front of Aimar who made no mistake and scored the equaliser.
United had some great chances to win the match at the end with chances from Berbatov and Fletcher.
This puts Manchester United in second place in Group C, with one match of group stages to go. United travel to Basel for the final round of the group stage. The top spot is still in United’s hands, but they will need to win big at Basel.
